20/20 VISION…
is a term used to express normal visual acuity measured at a distance of 20 feet. If you have 20/20 vision, you can see clearly at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. If you have 20/100 vision, it means that you must be as close as 20 feet to see what a person with normal vision can see at 100 feet.
AMBLYOPIA/LAZY EYE…
is the loss or lack of the full development of vision on one eye that is not fully correctable with lenses and is not the result of any identifiable eye health problem. It is usually due to conditions such as crossed-eyes or a large difference in the glasses prescription between the two eyes. This condition is treated with a combination of corrective lenses, prisms, contact lenses, and vision therapy. If you feel you, or someone you know, suffers from this condition please call our office to schedule an appointment.
ASTIGMATISM…
is a vision condition that occurs when the front surface of your eye (cornea) is shaped like a football resulting in vision being blurred at long distances. When you have astigmatism the light does not focus at one single point. This condition can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Lenses that correct for astigmatism have different curves to help focus all light rays at one single point on the retina for a clear image. If you feel you, or someone you know, suffers from this condition please call our office to schedule an appointment.
CATARACT…
is a condition of the eye when the normally clear lens within your eye becomes cloudy or opaque. They are most often found in persons over the age of 55, but they are also occasionally found in younger people including newborns. They can be due to advancing age, excessive ultraviolet radiation from sunlight, injury, other diseases, certain medications, or heredity. Dr. Fiegel can prescribe changes in your eyeglasses that will help you see more clearly until surgery is necessary. If your cataract develops to a point that your daily activities are affected, you will be referred to an eye surgeon who may recommend its removal by surgery. If you, or someone you know, suffers from this condition please call our office IMMEDIATELY to schedule an appointment!
DIABETES…
is a disease that prevents your body from making or using insulin to break down sugar in your bloodstream. It can affect most parts of your body including your eyes. Visual symptoms include fluctuation or blurring of vision, occasional double vision, and visual field loss. It can result in cataracts, glaucoma, eye muscle coordination loss, and decreased corneal sensitivity. Long-term diabetes can cause a weakening of the retinal blood vessel and result in DIABETIC RETINOPATHY. If this is left undetected, blindness can result. However, if diagnosed at an early stage, it can be treated with laser surgery. It is important to control your diabetes as much as possible to minimize your risk of developing retinopathy. If you have diabetes it is important to remember that you MUST HAVE a dilated retinal exam yearly. If it has been longer than a year since your last eye exam please call our office IMMEDIATELY to schedule an appointment!
DRY EYES…
occurs when the eyes don’t produce the necessary quantity of tears or produces tears that are lacking in the proper composition. Symptoms usually include scratchy, dry, red, irritated, or generally uncomfortable eyes. Some other conditions may include blurred vision, excessive watering of the affected area and the feeling that there is a foreign body in the eye. If you feel you, or someone you know, suffers from this condition please call our office to schedule an appointment.
EMMETROPIA…
is the term used to indicate that there is no refractive error and no prescription is needed.
GLAUCOMA…
is a disease of the eye in which the fluid pressure in your eye gets too high and damages the optic nerve. The pressure that builds up is due to a problem in the flow or drainage of fluid normally produced in your eye. This damage can cause severe vision loss (usually starting in your peripheral/side vision without symptoms) and even blindness if left untreated. If diagnosed at an early stage, it can be controlled by prescription eye drops or surgery if necessary. If you, or someone you know, suffers from this condition please call our office IMMEDIATELY to schedule an appointment!
HYPEROPIA (FARSIGHTEDNESS)…
is a condition in which objects far away are clear, but things close to you are blurry. This occurs when your eyeball is too short or the cornea has too little curvature that the light focuses behind the retina instead of one it. This condition can be treated with glasses and contact lenses. If you feel you, or someone you know, suffers from this condition please call our office to schedule an appointment.
MACULAR DEGENERATION…
is a condition that usually affects people older than age 50 because the tissue in the small central part of the retina (macula) deteriorates. Sometimes abnormal blood vessels also develop which may leak and eventually cause scarring and vision loss. The vision loss is irreversible, but supplements and laser treatment may help slow vision loss. If you, or someone you know, suffers from this condition please call our office IMMEDIATELY to schedule an appointment!
MYOPIA (NEARSIGHTEDNESS)…
is a vision condition in which things close to you are clear and things far away are blurry. This occurs when your eyeball is too long or the cornea has too much curvature that light entering the eye is not focused properly on the retina at the back of the eye. This condition can be treated with eyeglasses, contact lenses, and sometimes surgery. If you feel you, or someone you know, suffers from this condition please call our office to schedule an appointment.
